A Save the Children helicopter transports essential emergency items - such as tents and family kits - for children and adults impacted by Cyclone Idai.
Cyclone Idai tore through central Mozambique on Friday 15 March 2019. The cyclone left a trail of destroyed homes, schools, hospitals and infrastructure. Torrential rain is still lashing the region and flood waters are rising and engulfing entire communities.
Some 1.85 million people are impacted, including 900,000 children.
Save the Children is a member of the COSACA consortium with Oxfam and CARE and is working in close coordination with the government and the National Institute of Disaster Management to support children impacted by the disaster.
Save the Children has started distributing emergency relief items to families who have lost their homes, including tents, buckets, jerry cans and water purifiers. We have also deployed our Emergency Health Unit who are setting mobile clinics to provide healthcare to children and adults living in temporary accommodation centres.
The consortium will work together to reconstruct partially destroyed schools and healthcare centres, and work to prevent disease outbreaks by providing access to clean water and promoting good hygiene practices.
Save the Children is aiming to reach at least 100,000 children and their families in the coming weeks and months.
