Lucia Francisco, 33, is a mother of six children. She is seen with her youngest daughter who is six months old. She is living near the village of Tica, an area greatly impacted by Cyclone Idai that is not just affecting her in Mozambique but is affecting 2.6 million people across three countries.
Today she had returned to what had been a flooded home and tried to begin to salvage what remained of her life.
Lucia said, “The storm started and lasted over two days. On the third day it started raining at 5am. And I thought it was simple rain, but it wasn’t normal, it was torrential. So I ran with my kids to a school (shelter). I have lost the crops, my clothes and the house including the utensils. I only saved my children. I felt my heart drop. Because I tried to find ways to survive with my children, but it has been a big problem. Now I am staying with my children and I hard to find a ways to get food. I have to prepare porridge for my children. For me and my community I would like to receive food and shelter. The food will help us be strong so we can rebuild our houses and lives.”
